Zombie Eating Horse – Nothing For No One – 8.5/10

Zombie Eating Horse is a band that formed in Whittier, California in 2011. Their drummer Orlando Garcia has already established himself in the metal scene as the drummer for Antagonist. Over the course of his 16+ years with that band, he has learned a lot about the music business including touring, recording, and dealing with record companies. He has incorporated this knowledge into his new band. However, it would be foolish for even a second to think that Zombie Eating Horse sounds exactly like Antagonist.           Whereas Antagonist focused on balancing between melodic metalcore and punk-influenced thrash metal, Zombie Eating Horse is a much more groove-based band. They are often balancing between the threshold of pure death metal, deathcore, and hardcore. However, even breaking it down to a phrase like that does not do this band justice. In retrospective, this is one of the grooviest albums I have heard in the last couple of years. This band does not just focus on unnecessary breakdowns. Even riff is perfect for head banging, and lasts exactly as long as it needs to. Every hit is hard and full of bounce, making them a must see live band.

There is a perfect balance between the drumming, the guitar playing, and the bass playing. It is thrashy at times, sludgy at times, catchy at times, melodic at times, all in the course of a 30-minute album. Jon’s vocals perfectly go on top, and don’t sound typical by any means necessary. In fact, this band has a certain charm at being able to stick out from all of their peers. The album itself flows through effortlessly, and helps make the album fly by that much more. From catchy hook to catchy hook, you go through this album without noticing the changes from song to song. It is relentless, and it is an incredible debut. Keep an eye out for this band, as they will be releasing new music sometime in 2016.
